After studying at St Johns Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, Hitchens became a member of the Seven and Five Society in 1922. This Shropshire scene of around 1930 reveals the influence of the sombre landscapes of André Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974), an artist of the School of Paris who exhibited in London during the 1920s.
