This small painting can be identified with a reference in the 'Musaeum Tradescantianum' of 1656 as a landscape by Sir Nathaniel Bacon, an amateur artist otherwise known for his large, flamboyant portraits and still lifes. It is the earliest surviving landscape painted by a native artist in Britain, but is indebted to Flemish models for the technique and Italian for the style.
