Born in Aberdeen, James Cadenhead studied at the RSA Schools in Edinburgh and in Paris under Carolus Duran. In 1886 he became a founder member of the New English Art Club.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
