A memorial to George William Lancaster (d.1920) and Elisa Mary Lancaster (d.1922), featuring a large and dramatic figure of a mourning female angel. She kneels beside the tomb with her left arm and vast wings draped over the top, her head hanging down to one side resting on her left shoulder. A bouquet of roses is gathered under her right arm and inside the folds of her dress. The tomb is a plain rectangular sarcophagus resting on bronze brackets and mounted on a stone platform and plinth. This work is influenced by North Italian tomb sculpture (especially Leonards Bistolfi) and is considered one of the most significant twentieth century examples of funerary sculpture. It is memorable for the fluid positioning of the body and the weight-defying droop of the wings over the stone sarcophagus.
