When he was living in the Lake District, Schwitters relied on the generosity of his small circle of friends, as well as a few pounds earned from painting portraits and landscapes. This painting depicts a cottage outside Grasmere where Schwitters is said to have slept rough for a short time. The hill in the background is known as ‘The Lion and The Lamb’.

Although he is more famous for his abstract collage work, he also enjoyed figurative painting: 'No man can create from fantasy alone. Sooner or later it will run dry on him, and only by the constant study of nature will he be able to replenish it and keep it fresh.'
