Fildes was an important Victorian social realist painter alongside his contemporaries Frank Holl and Hubert Von Herkomer. Alongside his socially engaged work, Fildes produced a lucrative line in portraits of wealthy individuals such as Lady Royds (1846–1925) who was married to Sir Clement Molyneux Royds (1842–1916). He served as an MP for Rochdale and was a partner in a successful banking business, Clement Royds & Co located on The Butts in Rochdale.
