This is a half-length, frontal portrait of Miss Don Wauchope of Edinburgh, whose head is turned slightly to the right. She is dressed in black with a wide brimmed black hat and gold hoop earrings. It is painted in broad brushstrokes, and although her facial features are easily distinguishable, her white gloves and hands are much rougher. The plain background matches the tones of pink and white in her hands, and balances the blackness of the clothing.
