Thomas Lawrence was at the height of his career in the 1820s and the leading portrait painter in Europe. His sitters were the most eminent in society, public life, literature and the arts. Lady Caroline Lamb was a novelist, infamous for her infatuation with Lord Byron whom she then caricatured in her novel 'Glenarvon'. Lawrence never completed this portrait of her, for she died in 1828. Here, she looks younger than her 42 years, but she was said to have had a childlike appearance. The clouds were added later, by an unknown artist.
