It is more than likely that the artist never intended that this small painting, which came into Bury's collection as part of the George Clough Bequest, should be included in a public art exhibition. It is all the more revealing for that and demonstrates his great skill in arriving at a formal solution with a few deft strokes of his brush. This is the first sketch for a panel in the House of Commons that illustrates one of those important moments in British political history, when the very first ever female Member of Parliament takes her seat in the Commons. Nancy, Lady Astor, flanked on either side by Lord Balfour and David Lloyd George, is escorted through the Lower House to change the course of politics. The composition is simple, with the three principal figures in a line parallel to the picture plane, yet the free and dashing way it is painted catches brilliantly the excitement of the moment.
