Lady Anne was directly related to Charles II. Her mother, Barbara Villiers (1641–1709), Duchess of Cleveland, had been one of Charles II’s favourite mistresses whom with the king had spent the night of his coronation. Barbara bore the king's child, Lady Anne, in February 1661.
One of the Barrett-Lennard family members, Thomas Lennard (1654–1715), 15th Lord Dacre, married Lady Anne Fitzroy (or Palmer) (1661–1722), later Countess of Sussex, in 1673 at Hampton Court. Lady Anne served as Lady of the Bedchamber to James II’s queen, Mary of Modena, in exile.
Some portraits from this collection can be seen on display in the Searchroom at Essex Record Office, such as those of James VII and II, and Barbara Villiers.
