Innovative, impressionist work representing a romantic scene where three women are seated on a terrace with wine glasses around a table, with a dog standing in the bottom left corner. The woman to the left wears a bright red dress, contrasting with the sombre brown and beige tones of the attire of the other two women. The background is an indistinct dark brown and green. The artists works are known to have been refused at the Salon because of their free handling of paint and impasto technique. However this lack of apparent naturalism was admired by artists such as van Gogh and Cézanne.
