Stormy wartime impressions seem to dominate Piper's view of Lacock Abbey. Illustrated in 'Piper's Places', the artist recalls a visit made to the Abbey in March 1942 whilst he was surveying bomb damage in nearby Bath. He commented on the sinister nature of the terracotta figures and wrote of 'peeling yellow plaster, dampening stonework, trestle tables sagging under dusty fragments'. This image of Lacock was painted from watercolour sketches made on 17th March.

The painting was shown in exhibitions for the Arts Council in 1971 and the Tate in 1984.

The artist's work mostly concentrated on Britain's landscape and churches. He also contributed to the design of the stained glass windows of Coventry Cathedral.
