Arnold Helcke was born in Birmingham, where his father manufactured gunpowder. Helcke came to Guernsey as a child but was forced to leave the island around 1872 after a series of explosions at the family’s gunpowder factory in Alderney. In England he pursued a successful career as a landscape and marine painter. He lived at Hampton Court, Surrey, until around 1880 when he moved to Portland Place, London and became associated with the Langham Studios. He exhibited frequently in London at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Grosvenor Gallery, British Institution, New Gallery, New Watercolour Society and in Paris at the Societe des Artistes Francais from 1894–1898. His exhibited work included mainly views of the French and English coast and several of Guernsey.
