Sylvia Gosse was a painter of interiors, still lifes and street scenes. She was from a wealthy, upper class family. Her parents were unenthusiastic about her desire to pursue an artistic career. The painter Sickert, who knew her parents, persuaded them that she had artistic talent. Sickert lived in Dieppe for several years, and Gosse had a cottage close to his. The Place Saint Jacques, with its impressive church, was a favourite subject for Sickert.
