This painting is a copy of Raphael's 'Santa Maria Della Sedia' which hangs in the Pitti Palace in Florence. It depicts Mary embracing the Christ Child whilst the young John the Baptist watches devoutly. The overall composition of the round, or ‘tondo’, painting enhances the clutching embrace between the two main figures, their closeness magnified by the confined frame. The use of the round composition also strengthens the connection between mother and child, which is the very essence of the painting.
