A copy of a composition by Watteau, of which two versions are known: one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and another in a private collection, New York. Listed under an attribution to Pater at the sale of Lord Henry Seymour in 1860, it was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford, perhaps for sentimental reasons. Certainly its mediocre quality was recognised at the time of the sale, when it was described in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts as ‘Pater or some other … A tired indifferent painting showing a promenade in a park’.
