Knight effigy in full armour. Depicted ready for battle wearing a 'great helm', a flat topped cylindrical helmet with a transverse slit for the visor. He is clothed in a knee length tunic/surcoat, padded and held at the waist by a belt. An unsheathed sword is held upright in the right hand. A large plain shield is held over the body by the left arm. No armorials remain, they were presumably originally painted. Head resting on pillow shown depressed by weight. Legs are shown in a walking pose, with the feet supported by a foliate bracket. Effigy of significant benefactor such as Baron William de Lancaster (d.1252) who arranged to be buried near his grandfather in the church. This effigy has no indication of mail on legs or arms, which may have been indicated originally by stamped gesso.
