The eldest son of Henry IV, he succeeded his father in 1413. A skilled political and military strategist, he diverted the nobility from grievances at home to conquest abroad, and renewed the English claim to the French throne. He recaptured Normandy, married the daughter of the French king Charles VI, and was made his heir (1420), but died suddenly two years later.
