This painting shows one of the most famous views of Keswick town in Cumbria, with the Moot Hall in the centre of the painting. All the people in the painting are the real people of Keswick town in 1870 and would have been easily recognised. Every person in the painting has been named with their profession. To the left of the painting you will see a white building – this was the work house, which is where the Post Office now stands.

The bearded gentleman with the walking stick in the front centre is the Skiddaw Hermit who lived beneath the Skiddaw Mountain in a small hut. His walking stick can be seen in Keswick Museum.
