Piper committed himself to Constructivism in the 1930s, developing a very strong topographical sense and sensitivity for space. Later he explored the relationship of architecture to landscape. He used these qualities from the 1950s onwards for many of his designs for stained glass. These concerns can be found in this painting which, with its bright colours, is typical of his work in the mid-1960s.
