Juliana Margaretta Waltersdorff (1769–1819) married Cornelius Hendrickson Kortright (1763/4–1818). This portrait may date from close to their marriage. The couple lived in the West Indies then settled in England at Hylands, their home from 1797 to 1814. Soon after moving in, the Kortrights engaged the landscape architect Humphry Repton to advise improvements to the Hylands estate, including landscaping the park and facing the house with white stucco.
