Juliana Margaretta Waltersdorff (1769–1819) married Cornelius Hendrickson Kortright (1763/4–1818). After several years in the West Indies the Kortrights moved to England and bought Hylands, their home from 1797 to 1814. The Kortrights engaged the landscape architect Humphry Repton to advise improvements to the Hylands estate, including landscaping the park. This picture shows Mrs Kortright in a married woman's cap, but still in fashionable classical dress. It may follow the birth of the Kortrights' seventh child, Samuel, baptised in April 1801 (they had two more children). Jens Juel was Professor, later Director, of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He was one of the first painters of the Danish 'Golden Age', influenced by the naturalism and informality of French and English art.
