A drinking fountain with portrait medallions of Queen Victoria. Originally it was located on the top of Martin’s Hill near to where the war memorial now stands. When the latter was erected in the 1920s the fountain was moved to its present position. Queen’s Mead was purchased by subscription in 1887 to celebrate the 50th year of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was the traditional site of Bromley fairs and gatherings. Up to the 1930s it was also the scene of all the main open-air events in the town including Broom Day when it is reported that thousands of people flocked to the Mead to celebrate the day.
