Caulfield contributed four paintings to 'The New Generation' exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery including 'Portrait of Juan Gris', made in his last year at the Royal College of Art. The original sketches show that he had been working on a portrait of Paul Cézanne, lauded in art schools as the father of modernism. However, he veered away from making an ironical comment about an art school cliché to paying homage to the Spanish Cubist, whom he admired for the architectural and decorative qualities of his work.
