Wording on the label: 'This portrait of Joseph Wolf was presented to the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) by a few friends and admirers of his splendid genius and of his 32 years work for the Society'. Wolf was commissioned by ZSL to illustrate many of its publications. Edwin Landseer decsribed Wolf as 'The best all-round animal painter that ever lived'. Originally it is said he was holding a cigar but this was changed at Wolf’s request to a hobby, a bird of prey.
