Wand was a distinguished New Testament Scholar, ecclesiastical historian and a prolific writer. He was Archbishop of Brisbane and Metropolitan of Queensland from 1934–1943 and made full use of the opportunities provided by journalism and broadcasting. He was recalled to England in 1943 and came to Bath and Wells. The Education Act passed in 1944 enabled him to give vigorous support to Church schools. He was dignified and friendly in his manner. His period of office was brief, because he was made Bishop of London, where he was involved in recovery after the effects of the War.

He was married to Anne Agnes and had one son and one daughter. He played his part in the Ecumenical Movement.
