Tunnard began his career as a textile designer but turned to painting from 1929, often using the natural world as a starting point for his abstract and semi-abstract compositions. After serving as a coastguard in Cornwall during the War, he taught design at Penzance School of Art (1948–1964). Tunnard was a keen amateur entomologist; he has, in this self-portrait, depicted himself with one of the insects in which he was interested, a sawfly (genus Cimbex).
