This little boy is named in a label on the back of the painting as John Theobald, painted aged eight and a half years.

John was born in July 1827, the first son of William and Sarah Theobald of Chatham Place, Blackfriars, London. Little is known of John, but his portrait came to Brodsworth Hall as a result of his sister, Georgiana’s marriage to Charles Sabine Thellusson, who built Brodsworth Hall. The label records that the portrait was painted by Joel Solomons on 4th February 1836.
