The work commemorates John Simpsons Kirkpatrick who was born in South Shields in 1892. Kirkpatrick was a member of the Australian Army Medical Corps during the First World War and carried many dead and wounded soldiers with his donkey from the battleground at Gallipoli. On 9th May 1915 Kirkpatrick died. The donkey, called Murphy, was awarded the Purple Cross for Animal Bravery in Australia in 1997. Simpsons carried over 15 injured solders on the donkey, unarmed.
