William Scott was Fellow from 1765 to 1782. John Scott was an undergraduate, matriculating in 1766, and Fellow from 1767 to 1773. Originally intended for New College Oxford, Chantrey was commissioned in 1840 and designed the monument before his death in 1841. Musgrave Lewthwaite Watson then received the commission. When Watson died the work was completed by his assistant, George Nelson. In 1844 New College found they had not the space for the monument, and it was offered to University College by the executors of John, second Earl of Eldon, in 1861 (possibly). It was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
