John Renshaw, a leading educationalist in Belfast during the first half of the twentieth century, was educated at Newry Intermediate School and at the Queen’s Colleges in Galway and Belfast. In 1904 he graduated from the Royal University of Ireland and received the degrees of LLB and LLD from Queen’s University in 1910 and 1913. In 1911 he founded Shaftsbury House Tutorial College in University Street, Belfast and remained its principal for many years. He was a member of Queen’s senate 1940–1956 and MP for Queen’s in the Northern Ireland Parliament 1943–1945.

The portrait, executed in a broad and fluent style and of a high standard, shows Renshaw in academic dress.
