John Postlethwaite was a solicitor who lived in a house on Stricklandgate in Kendal and had a second career as a tea merchant. It was his cousin, John Myers, who introduced Romney to London society when he moved there in 1762, which may imply that Postlethwaite was more a friend than a professional client of Romney.

It has been suggested that the green drape on the right-hand side of the portrait may refer to Kendal Green, a coarse woollen cloth that had been manufactured locally for centuries. It may be a token of the sitter’s and artist’s shared cultural pride.
