John Pearse was Governor of the Bank of England from 1810–1812, having previously served as a Director and Deputy Governor. In 1818 he became MP for Devizes in Wiltshire, holding the seat until 1832. He spoke regularly in the House of Commons where he was considered an expert on financial matters. Pearse was part of a group of five prominent men from the City who each appear to have lent £5,000 to the failing firm of Manning & Anderdon in around 1830. They seem to have provided this loan with the hope of rescuing the business for the benefit of the financial sector at large. William Manning, a partner in the firm, had succeeded Pearse as Governor of the Bank of England in 1812. Another former Governor of the Bank of England, Jeremiah Harman, was among the group of lenders.
