Dr Hunt practised in Chelsea (1937–1939) and Belgravia, London (1945–1981). The existence of the RCGP owes much to John Hunt, following the well-known letter proposing a College of General Practice that he co-authored with Fraser Rose in October 1951. Hunt was a well-known private physician. As a member of the House of Lords, he participated in many debates on medical affairs and was responsible for steering the 1978 Medical Act through the Upper House.

He is shown standing, three-quarter length in Presidential robes, chain and pendant with the mace on the table and holding the 18th annual report (1970). John Hunt believed that the Annual Report was of importance as a historical document and its inclusion in his portrait was no doubt intended to reflect this.
