John Gibson Fleming was educated at the University of Glasgow and graduated MD in 1830. He was appointed a surgeon in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1846 and became a Manager there in 1850. He was responsible for the continuation of the Infirmary as a teaching hospital with its own medical school following the move of clinical instruction by the University of Glasgow to the Western Infirmary. The portrait was commissioned posthumously by the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1880.
