This half-length portrait of the poet John Fitchett depicts him turned slightly to his right and dressed in a dark jacket with a shawl collar over a white shirt and a black cravat. Fitchett was the son of a wine merchant from Liverpool whose parents both died before he reached the age of 10. His guardian, Mr Kerfoot, placed him at the Warrington Grammar School and in 1793 he was articled to his guardian, later being taken into partnership with him. His first published work 'Bewsey, a Poem', written at the age of 18, had considerable success and his first collection was printed at Warrington in 1836 under the title 'Minor Poems, composed at various Times'. His major life's work was a romantic epic poem entitled 'King Alfred' and he spent 40 years researching and writing it.
