The work shows Betjeman dressed in a suit with a waistcoat, an open coat, and a trilby hat. He is holding on to his hat as he gazes up at the roof of the station. He is carrying a bag with his books in his right hand and his coat is billowing up behind him. Under his feet is a disc of Cumbrian slate with lines from his poem 'Cornish Cliffs'.
