The 8th Viscount succeeded his father, the 7th Viscount, in 1800. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire from 1805 to 1847 and as Rector of King's College, Aberdeen from 1827 to 1837. He sat in the House of Lords as a representative peer for Scotland from 1818 to 1820 and from 1821 to 1847.
