John Allesbrook Simon, 1st Viscount was made a Fellow of All Souls in 1897. Elected a Member of Parliament as a Liberal for Walthamstow from 1908 to 1918 and for Spen Valley from 1922 until 1940. Home Secretary in the Asquith government from 1915 to 1916, Foreign Secretary from 1935 to 1937 under Ramsay MacDonald, Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1937 to 1940 under Neville Chamberlain. From 1940 to 1945 he was Lord Chancellor in Winston Churchill's government. He was created Viscount in 1945.
