J. A. Gotch (1852–1942) was almost the only President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1923–1925) to have a serious understanding of, and interest in, architectural history. He was also the first President to practice wholly in the provinces, rather than have a London office. Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, over his long lifetime he transformed the town, designing almost all its significant buildings from schools and banks to pubs and war memorials. The study of architectural history was central to his life and he was the first man in more than 150 years to take the work of Inigo Jones seriously and he published the first modern book on him. He was painted by his brother.
