John, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, was the single most important benefactor in the early stages of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. On his succession as 2nd Earl in 1742, he granted the Infirmary an annual payment of £400 for the care of incurable patients. This portrait by Allan Ramsay was given to the Infirmary as a gift from the artist; the Earl had earlier questioned this gesture and its suitability as a gift to the hospital, finally expressing his views to the Infirmary treasurer that Ramsay had permission from him to do as he pleased, ‘rather than deprive the Managers of what may have Merit from the hand by which it is drawn’.
