Born in New York, William Gallagher attended the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1937, gaining his diploma in 1947. He joined the teaching staff of the GSA in 1968 and worked mainly in the School of Architecture until 1978. The sitter, the architect Joseph Park, had been on the visiting staff of the GSA's School of Architecture during the 1950s.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
