Jessie Dickson was born in Kent and married Mr Harry W. Purkiss at West Ham Parish Church in 1888. In 1911, they moved to newly-built housing at Charlebury Gardens, Seven Kings, with their three children, Harry, Reginald and Mabel.

The painting was donated to the London Borough of Redbridge by Jessie's granddaughter in 1980 and now forms part of the collections of Redbridge Museum.
