The artist embarked for Palestine in 1923, paid for by the Palestine Foundation Fund who expected him to record 'Zionist reconstruction work'. Instead, he painted vigorous views of Jerusalem which sold well to the city's governing officials. The voyage and his destination had awed him: 'I was a poor boy from the East End and I'd never seen the sunlight before'. When he returned to Europe in 1927 his expressive approach to landscape brought him little critical success and his importance as both an artist and a teacher was not recognised until after his death.
