Fashion designer Muir is famed for the classic cut and simplicity of her garments. She taught herself to sew at boarding school, and later took a job in the stockroom of Liberty's department store in London. She worked for Jaeger during the 1950s, forming her own company Jane & Jane in 1967. In 1966, with her husband, Harry Leuckert Muir, formed Jean Muir Limited. Her designs, which emphasised perfect tailoring, featured simple shapes and were flattering, elegant and refined. Muir's many honours include the British Fashion Industry Award in 1984.
