Born in Falkirk in 1931, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder is widely recognised as one of Scotland's most successful living artists. Elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1972 and the Royal Academy in 1976 she was the first woman to become a member of both esteemed institutions.

The Japanese aesthetic has long been a source of inspiration for Blackadder with its careful consideration of form and space. She made many visits to East Asia in the 1980s and 1990s, travelling widely and visiting many traditional gardens.

Japanese subjects continue to appear in her work to this day, whether through the incorporation of Oriental objects into still lifes, paintings of patterned kimonos acquired on travels, or through the remembrance of Japanese interiors seen on earlier visits.
