James Willing (1838–1915) was Chairman of two family run advertising companies and a playwright, who produced a number of plays in the 1870s and 1880s for the Standard Theatre in London. He was an active Freemason and a member of a number of lodges. In this portrait he is wearing the regalia of a master, or ruler, of a lodge whose emblem is the set square. He is also wearing several Masonic medals, or jewels, given to him by the lodges of which he was a member. The jewel on his collar features his coat of arms, and was given to him by Willing Lodge No.2893, which was named after him in 1902. This portrait was given to the Lodge by one of James Willing's ancestors and is currently on loan to the Library and Museum of Freemasonry.
