Not only were the Barrett-Lennard family royalists, but their high rank in society throughout the centuries allowed them to be surrounded by eminent figures at court and aristocratic circles. One of the Barrett-Lennard family members, Thomas Lennard (1654–1715), 15th Lord Dacre, married Lady Anne Fitzroy (or Palmer) (1661–1722), later Countess of Sussex, in 1673 at Hampton Court. Lady Anne served as Lady of the Bedchamber to James II’s queen, Mary of Modena, in exile.
