James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots by her second husband, Lord Darnley. Seated, King James wears the full robes of the Order of the Garter. His ruff follows the line of his jaw, being higher at the back, so framing his face, complemented by his short hair style. Over his shoulders he wears a white and red velvet dress cloak, with red velvet sash and the collar and badge of St George and the dragon, belonging to members of the Order of the Garter. He also wears a silk bodice, breeches and, on his lower legs, stockings, known as 'nether hose', rolled above the knee and secured by garters. On his feet he wears decorated rounded toe shoes secured with ribbon tied in a rosette bow. His sword lies across his left leg and his plumed wig is on a table to his left.
