The king is wearing the badge of the order of the Knight of the Garter.

The artist came to England in 1616 and from 1617 was in royal employment with payments for royal portraits recorded up to the time of his death in 1622. This painting probably derives from van Somer's prime version in the Royal Collection dated 1618.
